Tübingen is a small historical town, dominated by the university that was founded by Count Eberhard in 1477. The old city centre is perfectly preserved as it was never touched by fire or war. Take some time to wander through the old streets and visit the castle with views over the city and the surrounding Swabian Alb. The oldest known mammoth-ivory carvings (mammoths, lions, horses, ducks, etc.) were found nearby and exhibited in the museum in the castle. Guided tours of the city and museum are organized on the Monday and Tuesday before the conference.
One of the highlights of Tübingen is the tree-lined Neckar River that runs through the middle of town. Traditional wooden punting boats (so-called Stocherkähne) ply the river and a punting tour will be organized on Friday, before the conference dinner. You may consider bringing bathers for a voluntary (or involuntary) dip in the river.
